Quick answer
The Royal Welsh Show 2027 runs from Monday 19 to Thursday 22 July at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells. Accommodation close to the showground goes early. A holiday cottage within a short drive, booked for the whole week, gives you a quiet place to return to each evening and avoids the daily scramble for a bed.
If you are planning a holiday around the Royal Welsh Show in 2027, the first decision is not which day to go. It is where to sleep. The show is Wales’s biggest agricultural event, it draws around a quarter of a million people to a small market town over four days, and every room, pitch and holiday let within easy reach of Builth Wells is in demand that week.
We run Graig Fawr, a stone barn holiday cottage for two on our conservation farm near Beulah, about 11 miles from Builth Wells. This guide is the one we would want if we were coming for the show ourselves: the dates, how to get in and out, what to plan for if you are bringing a dog, and why a base a little way out of town often makes show week more enjoyable rather than less.
Royal Welsh Show 2027: the dates
The Royal Agricultural Society of Wales has confirmed that the 2027 Royal Welsh Show takes place from Monday 19 July to Thursday 22 July at the Royal Welsh Showground, Llanelwedd, Builth Wells. That is four full show days, each with roughly a twelve-hour programme in the rings and around the ground.
The show was first held in 1904 in Aberystwyth and has been at its permanent home in Llanelwedd for more than sixty years. Each year a different county takes the role of feature county; for 2027 it is Anglesey (Ynys Môn).
Opening hours, ticket prices and the full ring programme for 2027 will be published by the RWAS nearer the time. Check rwas.wales before you buy tickets or fix your travel plans, and buy tickets in advance where the option is offered.
Why accommodation near the Royal Welsh Show goes early
Builth Wells is a small town. During show week it is also the busiest place in Wales. Competitors and their stock, exhibitors and trade-stand staff, stewards, judges and visitors all need somewhere to stay, and many of them come back year after year to the same place. That leaves fewer beds for first-time visitors than you might expect.
Practically, that means three things:
- Book early. If you know you are going in 2027, it is worth securing somewhere to stay well before the summer.
- Look a little further out. Places 10 to 20 miles from the showground are often easier to find and quieter to come back to than rooms in the middle of town.
- Book the whole show, not just one night. Many visitors find one day is not enough to see the livestock, the main ring, the food hall and the trade stands, and a multi-night holiday turns a rushed day trip into a proper week away.
Staying in town versus a holiday cottage out of town
There is no single right answer, so here is the honest comparison.
| Staying in or next to Builth Wells | A holiday cottage 10–20 miles out | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting to the showground | Walkable or a very short drive | A drive in, ideally timed to avoid the peak arrival rush |
| Evenings | Lively, busy pubs, plenty of show atmosphere | Quiet, dark skies, your own space |
| Availability in show week | Very limited, books up early | Better, but still worth booking well ahead |
| Sleep | Can be noisy with late-night traffic and crowds | Rural quiet |
| Dogs | Depends entirely on the accommodation | Depends on the let; some, like Graig Fawr, welcome dogs |
| Self-catering | Often hotel or B&B | Your own kitchen for early breakfasts and late suppers |
If you want to be in the thick of it day and night, stay in town. If you want to spend a long day at the show and come home to quiet, a holiday let out in the hills is the better fit.
Getting to the showground each day
Whatever you book, plan your daily route into the show before you arrive.
By car and park and ride
There is no general car parking on the showground itself. The RWAS runs free park and ride car parks on the main routes into Builth Wells, with free buses to the ground (in recent years these have run from early morning until late evening). Blue Badge holders have a forward parking area with free low-access shuttle buses. Make a note of which car park you used, because at the end of a long day they all look alike.
Roads into Builth Wells are at their busiest at peak arrival and departure times. Leaving early in the morning, or coming back after the evening events, usually means a calmer drive. From Graig Fawr the route in is about 11 miles on country roads and the A483.
By train and bus
Builth Road station, on the Heart of Wales line, is just over a mile from the showground, and the T4 bus between Newtown and Cardiff stops in Builth Wells and Llanelwedd. These are useful if you are staying on those routes, but out in the hills around Beulah there is no public transport worth relying on, so a car is essential if you stay with us.
Bringing a dog to the Royal Welsh Show
This catches out a lot of visitors. Dogs are not allowed inside the showground perimeter fence, with the exception of assistance dogs, and even assistance dogs are kept out of the livestock and equine buildings and several of the pavilions. The RWAS is also clear that dogs must not be left in cars.
So if you are coming for the show week with a dog, the dog needs its own plan for show days. That is easier to arrange from a dog-friendly holiday let than from a hotel room. Talk to your host before you book about how you intend to manage show days, so there are no surprises. If you are coming for a dog event at the showground rather than the main show, our guide to dog events at the Royal Welsh Showground covers the shows where dogs are the point.
Book direct and save
Book directly with the hosts — send a brief enquiry with your dates and they will come back to you with them confirmed. Direct rates start at £130 a night for a short break, or £105 a night for a week or more, and there are no booking fees. Prefer to see a live calendar first? Graig Fawr is on Airbnb too.
What to see at the show
The Royal Welsh is first and foremost a livestock and equine show, and that is what most regular visitors come for. Alongside the judging you will find:
- Livestock and equine competitions across cattle, sheep, horses, ponies and more, with entries travelling from across Wales and beyond.
- The main ring programme, with displays and competitions through each day.
- The Heavy Horse Village and working sheepdog demonstrations.
- The Food Hall, showcasing Welsh producers, with a food crèche where you can leave your shopping bags while you carry on round the ground.
- The Horticultural Village and a very large number of trade stands.
It is a big site and a long day. Comfortable footwear, layers for changeable weather, water and a plan for lunch make a real difference. Cash machines are on site, but most gates are card-only, so check the RWAS visitor information before you set off.
Making a holiday of show week
Most visitors to Mid Wales in July never leave the showground, which is a shame, because this is the best of the summer here. If you have a spare day or two either side of the show, the area rewards it.
- Red kites at Gigrin Farm, near Rhayader, around 11 miles from Graig Fawr. Our guide to watching red kites at Gigrin Farm has the details.
- The Elan Valley reservoirs, 10 to 15 miles north, for easy walking and big views.
- Walking near Builth Wells, from short riverside strolls to longer hill routes, in our complete route guide.
- Food and pubs between Beulah and Builth Wells, including the Red Lion at Llanafanfawr, covered in our guide to places to eat near Graig Fawr.
If you are coming for the shorter winter event instead, the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in late November has its own rhythm; see a peaceful place to stay near the Royal Welsh Winter Fair.
How long to book for
Show week runs Monday to Thursday, so a weekend break will not catch it. A short break of three nights covers two full show days with an evening either side. Four or five nights covers the whole show without rushing. A week lets you do the show properly and then have a few days in the hills to recover.
Graig Fawr has a three-night minimum in July and August, which suits the show well: arrive on the Sunday, settle in, and walk through the gates on Monday morning. Check-in is from 3pm and checkout is before 10am, so on your last day you can still get away in good time.

Why Graig Fawr suits a Royal Welsh Show holiday
Graig Fawr is a single-storey stone barn holiday cottage for two, with one double bedroom and an en-suite walk-in shower, on our 40-acre conservation farm near Beulah. It is about 11 miles from Builth Wells, close enough for an easy drive in each morning and far enough out that the evenings are completely quiet.
- Your own space at the end of a long day: a raised private patio looking over the wildlife pond and pasture, with a barbecue for summer evenings.
- A proper kitchen: electric oven and hob, dishwasher, fridge-freezer and washer-dryer, for early breakfasts and late suppers without queuing.
- Off-road parking for two cars, and self check-in by key lockbox.
- Dog-friendly: up to two well-behaved dogs at no extra charge, with mown trails across the land.
- Reliable wifi indoors, so you can check the ring timetable or the traffic before you set off.

Booked direct with us, a short break is £130 a night and a week or more is £105 a night, with no booking fees. Check the Graig Fawr page for current rates before you book, because they can change by season.
The honest limitations: you will need a car, there is no hot tub or pool, and show week is busy everywhere around Builth, including on the roads. If you want to walk back from the showground at midnight, a holiday let 11 miles away is not for you. If you want quiet after the crowds, it is.
