About this product

Grazing Garden is a perennial wildflower mix for adding diversity to an existing paddock or sowing as a separate strip. It includes lady’s bedstraw, kidney vetch, sainfoin, salad burnet, ribwort plantain, meadowsweet, wild carrot, dandelion and lucerne. Several are deep-rooted, which helps soil structure and keeps them green in dry spells.

Suitable for donkeys?

Use with care. The mix contains lucerne (alfalfa), which is rich in protein and energy. Donkey welfare advice generally keeps alfalfa for underweight donkeys, so for overweight or laminitis-prone donkeys we recommend sowing this only as a small strip or at a low overseed rate, not across the whole paddock. For most donkey paddocks, our Self-Select Herb Mix is the simpler choice.

How to use it

  • Sow at 1.5g per mยฒ, or 1โ€“2kg per acre when overseeding
  • Sow onto bare soil or into a sward opened up to at least 50% bare ground
  • Fence off sown strips until plants are established, ideally through the first summer

What success looks like

These are perennials, so year one is mostly leafy growth. Flowering builds from year two, from May into September, and the plants persist where grazing pressure allows them to recover.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grazing Garden safe for donkeys?

It contains lucerne (alfalfa), which is rich for donkeys. Sow it only as a small strip or at a low rate in donkey paddocks, and avoid it for overweight or laminitis-prone donkeys.

Does the mix contain yarrow, buttercup or ragwort?

No. None of these are in the mix.

Can I sow it straight into my paddock?

Yes, if you open the sward up first. Harrow hard so at least half the surface is bare soil, sow, roll and rest the area.

How long until it flowers?

Mainly from the second year, as all species are perennials.
