Wildflower Seeds for Powys

Wildflower Seeds for Powys — Grown on Our Home Meadows in the Irfon Valley

Powys is where Wildahome began. Paul and Kirstie Stenning’s holding at Tyn-y-Clyn, in the Irfon valley above Builth Wells, is where the business is based and where a significant portion of our seed is grown. The meadows here — managed for nature and seed production at 350 metres above sea level — are the foundation of everything Wildahome sells.

For customers in Powys, this is as local as provenance gets. Seed grown in the conditions of mid-Wales hill country, in soils and a climate directly comparable to much of the county, will establish with a resilience and ecological appropriateness that imported or lowland-origin seed cannot match.

Powys habitats and which mix to choose

Upland acid grassland and rough pasture — Acidic Soils mix

The bulk of Powys sits on Silurian shale and mudstone that produce thin, acidic soils with a pH typically between 4.5 and 6.0. This is the natural territory of the Acidic Soils mix: Harebell, Tormentil, Heath Bedstraw, Heath Milkwort, Devil’s Bit Scabious, and Lousewort — the species that define the upland semi-natural grasslands of the Cambrian Mountains, the Elenydd, and the hill country around Builth Wells and Rhayader.

River valley meadows — Traditional 80/20 mix

The river valleys of Powys — the Wye, Ithon, Irfon, Severn headwaters, and Tywi — have deeper, more fertile soils where neutral grassland communities can thrive. The ancient hay meadows of the upper Wye and Ithon valleys support Oxeye Daisy, Common Knapweed, Meadow Buttercup, Yellow Rattle, Betony, and Pignut. The Traditional 80/20 mix is the appropriate starting point for any valley-bottom or lowland Powys site with a pH above 6.

Wet grassland and rhos pasture — Wetland & Pond mix

Powys holds more rhos pasture — rush and purple moor-grass dominated wet grassland — than any other county in Wales. The Wetland & Pond mix is suited to wetter sites, pond margins, and stream edges across the county. Contact us before ordering for any rhos restoration project — this is specialist ground.

Hedgerow and lane banks — Hedgerow & Banks mix

The ancient hedgebanks and green lanes of Powys — particularly in the lowland east and in the Marches border country around Welshpool and Montgomery — support Red Campion, Primrose, Greater Stitchwort, and Foxglove. The Hedgerow & Banks mix is formulated for these partially shaded conditions.

Ground preparation in Powys

Yellow Rattle is essential — on any Powys site with established grass competition, include Yellow Rattle in your mix or sow it separately in autumn. The vigorous hill grasses of Powys will suppress wildflowers unless their vigour is reduced.

Autumn sowing is the rule — in Powys, spring sowing into a wet, cold soil is rarely successful. Sow between August and October. Yellow Rattle must be autumn-sown.

Strip or suppress existing vegetation — rushes, mat-grass, and bracken must be dealt with before sowing. Cultivate, scarify, or use a stale seedbed technique to expose mineral soil.

Do not add compost — even on thin Powys soils, the goal is low fertility. Do not add organic matter, lime, or fertiliser before sowing.

Wildahome in Powys

The Tyn-y-Clyn meadows are managed without fertiliser, herbicide, or pesticide. Cut once annually in late summer with all material removed. The diversity that has developed over years of this management — and the seed harvested from these fields — is what we sell.

We are a small, family-run business with direct personal experience of what it takes to establish and maintain wildflower habitats in the specific conditions of mid-Wales. Call Paul on 0333 242 0602 or email paul@wildahome.co.uk for advice on your Powys project.
