About this product

Self-Select is a simple herb mix of sainfoin, sheep’s parsley, salad burnet, ribgrass and fenugreek. Oversow it at a low rate into an existing paddock, or sow a dedicated herb strip or trough where animals can browse and choose for themselves.

Suitable for donkeys?

Yes. Sown at a low rate, the herbs form only a small part of the sward and add browsing interest and variety without making the paddock richer. A fenced herb strip that donkeys are given short access to works particularly well as enrichment.

How to use it

  • Oversow at ยฝโ€“1kg per acre into a harrowed paddock
  • For a herb strip or trough, sow at 2โ€“3g per mยฒ
  • Sow March to May or late August to October
  • Protect strips from grazing until plants are established

What success looks like

Scattered herbs through the sward from the first summer. Several of these herbs are deep-rooted, so they stay green when grass browns off in dry weather.

Frequently asked questions

Are these herbs suitable for donkeys?

Yes. Sown at a low rate, they add variety and browsing interest without making the paddock richer.

How much do I need?

500g oversows about half to one acre; 1kg covers one to two acres.

Can I grow it in a trough?

Yes. Sow at 2โ€“3g per mยฒ and let animals browse once the plants are established.

Will the herbs survive grazing?

They persist best with rotational grazing and rest periods. Constant close grazing will thin them out.
