About this product

Wet Ground is blended for horse paddocks on heavy clay and ground that lies wet. Tall fescue and several creeping fescues root deeply and tolerate waterlogging, smooth-stalked meadow grass knits the turf against poaching, and a proportion of perennial ryegrass gets the paddock established quickly.

Suitable for donkeys?

No. This mix contains perennial ryegrass and tall fescue, which produce a more productive, higher-sugar sward than donkeys need. For donkeys on wet ground, use our Second Season Paddock Overseeder (mediumโ€“heavy blend) and work on drainage and gateway hardstanding instead.

Do this / avoid this

  • Do sow when the soil is workable, not when it is saturated
  • Do consider drainage or hardcore gateways alongside reseeding
  • Avoid turning out on wet new sowings
  • Avoid this mix for laminitis-prone ponies

Frequently asked questions

Can donkeys graze this mix?

We don't recommend it for donkeys. It contains perennial ryegrass and tall fescue. Use Second Season Paddock Overseeder for donkey paddocks.

Will it fix a waterlogged field?

It will establish and persist better than most mixes on wet ground, but it won't fix drainage. Address drainage and gateways at the same time.

How much do I need?

One 13kg bag sows one acre.

When should I sow on clay?

When the soil is workable: typically April to May, or September before autumn rain sets in.
