Wild Tulip Bulbs (Tulipa sylvestris)

The Wild Tulip (Tulipa sylvestris) is the only tulip found growing wild in Britain — a graceful, slender-stemmed species quite unlike the stiff garden hybrids. Its pointed buds nod before opening into starry, rich yellow flowers, often flushed green or bronze on the outside, with a light and pleasant scent. It grows to around 25cm and flowers in March and April.

It is found in old meadows, orchards, open woodland and hedge banks, and in the garden it suits exactly these settings: naturalised in grass that is left uncut until early summer, in the front of a sunny border, beneath deciduous trees, or through a wildflower area. It spreads by underground runners as well as by offsets, so over time it forms loose colonies. It can be shy to flower in its first year or two while it settles in — this is normal.

Plant in autumn, September to December, at 10–15cm depth and 10–15cm apart in well-drained soil. Full sun or light shade both suit it; good drainage over winter matters more than soil type. Leave the leaves to die back naturally after flowering and, in grass, delay cutting until they have withered.
