100% Wildflower Seed Mixes (No Grass)

A 100% wildflower mix is exactly that: native wildflower seed with no grass seed added. Choose it when you want the flowers without the sward — to over-sow an existing lawn, paddock or meadow that already has grass, to create a flower-rich strip or border, or to add wildflowers to a grass mix of your own. Because there is no grass in the packet, the seed goes further: 100% mixes are sown at 3 g per square metre, and packs run from 20 m² to 6,500 m². What “100% wildflower” means

Every mix in this category is made up entirely of British native wildflower species, with no grass seed included. The same 13 habitat selections are available as 80/20 mixes; the wildflower component is the same, the difference is simply whether grass seed is included. That makes 100% mixes the flexible option: you decide what grass, if any, they grow with.

When a 100% mix is the right choice

  • Over-sowing existing grass. If you already have a lawn, orchard floor, paddock or field with a grass sward, you do not need more grass. Cut it short, scarify hard to expose at least half bare soil, sow the 100% mix, and roll or tread it in. Adding Yellow Rattle in autumn helps by weakening the grass.
  • Flower-rich areas without a sward. Borders, beds, verge strips and school or community plots where the aim is flowers rather than a cuttable meadow.
  • Your own blend. Combine a 100% mix with our Native Grass Seed Selection or single species to make a tailored mix for a specific brief.

When to choose 80/20 instead

On bare, cultivated or newly stripped ground, a 100% mix will leave gaps that weeds and coarse grasses fill. If you want a complete meadow that can be cut once a year and walked on, sow an 80/20 mix so the fine grasses establish alongside the flowers.

Matching the mix to your ground

The habitat selections mirror the 80/20 range: Traditional and General Purpose for most well-drained soils; Chalk & Limestone; Heavy Clay; Wetland & Pond; Loam & Alluvial; Hedgerow & Banks (part shade); Woodland & Heavy Shade; Coastal; Acidic Soils; Restoration; Bee & Butterfly; and Cornfield Annuals (an annual display for cultivated ground — it will not persist as a perennial meadow). Read the Setting line on each product and choose for your soil, moisture and light, not the picture.

Sowing rate, timing and preparation

  • Rate: 3 g per square metre for all 100% mixes.
  • When: spring (March–May) or early autumn (August–September).
  • Ground: low nutrient, exposed soil. Into existing grass, that means cutting short and scarifying; on bare ground, a firm, weed-free seedbed. Never add fertiliser.
  • Afterwards: keep the first year’s growth cut if it gets rank, remove cuttings, and expect the flowers to build from year two.

Does 100% wildflower seed contain grass?

When should I choose a 100% mix rather than an 80/20 mix?

When the area already has grass (over-sowing a lawn, paddock or meadow), when you want a flower-only planting, or when you are making your own blend. For a new meadow on bare ground, choose 80/20.

Can I sow wildflower seed into existing grass?

Yes, with preparation: cut the grass very short, scarify to expose bare soil over at least half the area, sow, and firm the seed in. Autumn sowing with Yellow Rattle gives the best results in a dense sward.

How do I prepare the ground?
